What cookies are

A “cookie” is a small text file installed by certain websites on a user’s computer when the user accesses a particular website or uses certain services offered by that website. Its purpose is to store and transfer information.

Cookies are sent by a web server (the computer on which the website being visited runs) to the user’s browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) and stored on the user’s device.

For further information and to learn more about cookies in general, visit www.allaboutcookies.org.

What cookies are used for

In general, cookies can be used for various purposes, such as monitoring how visitors use a website, improving navigation between pages, allowing users to set personal preferences on the websites they visit, protecting users’ security and displaying advertising based on visitors’ interests. Information encoded in cookies may include personal data, such as an IP address, username, unique identifier or email address, but may also include non-personal data, such as language settings or information about the type of device a person uses to browse the website. There may be “active” identifiers, such as cookies, or “passive” observation identifiers, including fingerprinting, a technique that identifies the device used by a user by collecting all or some of the information about the specific configuration of that device adopted by the data subject.

Both types, for example, enable the “display of behavioural advertising” through profiling.

Types of cookies and purposes of use

In general, and according to common terminology, cookies may have different characteristics that allow them to be classified by:

  • the length of time they remain on the user’s device: these are known as session/temporary cookies or persistent cookies;
  • their origin: these are known as first-party cookies (sent to the browser directly by the website being visited) or third-party cookies (sent to the browser by other websites, rather than the website being visited);
  • their purpose: in this case, also in line with the rules established by the Italian Data Protection Authority, cookies are referred to as technical cookies, identifying analytics cookies or profiling cookies.

Under this classification, the same cookie may have all these characteristics at once: for example, it may be a persistent third-party cookie used for profiling.

Storage duration

Session/temporary cookies: these are not stored persistently, but only for the duration of the browsing session. This means they are automatically deleted from the user’s device once the user has left the website and closed the browser.

Persistent cookies: these are stored on the user’s device until the user deletes them or they reach their preset expiry date, if any. They are therefore not automatically deleted from the user’s device when the user leaves the website.

Origin

First-party cookies: these are cookies issued by the website currently being visited; the website is the one corresponding to the address entered by the user (the website displayed in the URL bar).

Third-party cookies: these are cookies issued by a website other than the one the user is visiting.

Purpose

Technical cookies: these cookies are essential for browsing the website and using certain specific features. They can be divided into:

  • Navigation/communication/performance cookies: these enable normal browsing and use of the website (for example, making a purchase or signing in to access restricted areas); if these cookies are blocked, the website may no longer function correctly.
  • “Strictly necessary” cookies (functionality/preferences/location/session status): these store information that changes the behaviour or appearance of the website (preferred language, text and font sizes, geographical location). If they are blocked, the browsing experience will be less functional but will not be compromised. These cookies allow the website to remember choices made by the user (such as language preferences or content of interest) and provide personalised features selected by the user, improving the browsing experience. In some cases, these cookies may also be used to offer online services (such as live chat) or to avoid offering users services they have previously declined.
  • reCAPTCHA (Google LLC): used on contact, support and purchase forms for anti-bot protection of forms. It involves the transfer of behavioural data to Google LLC (USA), on the basis of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (European Commission Decision of 10 July 2023) and the Standard Contractual Clauses.

Analytics cookies: analytics cookies are used to allow web services to collect information about user access, such as the number of visitors to the website, how long they stay and which parts of the website they visit. These cookies may be first-party or third-party cookies.

  • Third-party statistical/analytics cookies without identifying capability (with IP masking and no cross-referencing with other data held by the third party): under current legislation, these cookies may be treated as technical cookies as they meet the following conditions: measures are adopted to reduce the identifying capability of the cookies by masking portions of the IP address; the third party undertakes to use these cookies exclusively to provide the service, to store them separately and not to “enrich” or “cross-reference” them with other information in its possession.
  • Third-party statistical/analytics cookies with identifying capability: these cookies collect information and generate website usage statistics to understand how visitors interact with the website. These cookies are considered to have a high identifying capability when the following conditions are not implemented simultaneously: (i) features that reduce the identifying capability of cookies are not adopted (for example, by masking significant portions of the IP address); (ii) the third party cross-references information contained in the cookies with other information it already holds.

Social widgets and command buttons

Social widgets/command buttons are specific “buttons”, often shown as graphic icons (such as the icons of social networks including Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram,…), that allow users browsing the website to perform an action or command (for example, “Like”) by clicking to interact directly with social networks. By clicking social widgets/command buttons, users can share website content on their social profiles, enabling content from the social network itself to be published and displayed on the website’s pages (for example, photos of friends). This website does not share browsing information or user data with social networks accessible from its pages through widgets or command buttons. For more information, users can consult the website of the social network or networks they belong to (www.facebook.com, www.instagram.com, www.linkedin.com).

Which cookies we use and how to manage or delete them

Our websites use different types of cookies and related technologies, each with a specific function. Users can browse the website without using cookies, although the browsing experience may not be optimal.

To manage your cookie preferences, we use the CMP (Cookie Management Platform) system provided by CookieYes (CookieYes DPA), which detects and stores your choices in compliance with applicable law.

The types of cookies used and their functions are listed below.

We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how users interact with the website’s pages, in order to improve the browsing experience and the features offered. Microsoft Advertising is used to measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns. For further information on how Microsoft collects and uses data, visit Microsoft’s Privacy Statement.

We also use Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager for traffic analysis and Google Ads for measuring advertising campaigns. For users with a Google Account who have given consent, this information may be associated with their account data for the purpose of ad personalisation. Google’s Privacy Policy, on cookies and on Analytics services

Some of the providers indicated above (Google LLC, Microsoft Corp., LinkedIn Corp.) are based in the United States of America. Transfers of personal data to these entities take place on the basis of: (i) the European Commission’s adequacy decision on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, for providers certified under the DPF; (ii) the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission, as an additional or alternative safeguard. The updated list of DPF-certified providers can be consulted at https://www.dataprivacyframework.gov/.

Navigation and session cookies

Navigation and session cookies enable normal browsing and use of the website (for example, displaying content on the device by recognising the language of the country from which the user connects, and preserving user states across the website’s pages). Navigation cookies are technical cookies and are therefore necessary for the website to operate, improving its quality and the browsing experience. They help make the website usable by enabling basic functions such as page navigation and access to protected areas. The website cannot function correctly without these cookies.

Analytics and statistics cookies

The website uses analytics/statistics cookies to collect and process statistical analyses of how users browse the website through computers or mobile applications, the number of pages visited and the number of clicks on a page while browsing. Our company uses the information generated about our websites to produce website usage reports and improve usability, functionality, the interface and communication. Our website processes the results of these analyses anonymously and exclusively for statistical purposes.

The providers identified for the service include Microsoft (Clarity) and Google (Analytics, Tag Manager).

Marketing and profiling cookies

Marketing cookies are generally used to track visitors across websites. Their purpose is to display advertisements that are relevant and engaging for individual users and therefore more valuable to third-party publishers and advertisers. They aim to understand individual users’ preferences so that targeted content of interest can be shown while browsing, based on previous browsing activity. The providers identified for the service include Google (Google Ads/DoubleClick), Microsoft (Microsoft Advertising) and LinkedIn (LinkedIn Insight Tag).

Additional third-party requests

Third-party requests are requests made by a website to load content from third-party domains. The connection may be to a subdomain or an unrelated domain name. While some third-party requests are necessary for a website to function (such as content loaded from a content delivery network), others are used to display advertisements, social media buttons, tracking scripts or other content. Our websites use content services provided by Google (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com, googletagmanager).

Some analytics and advertising tools used on our websites may use device fingerprinting techniques, which detect the characteristics of the user’s device for statistical or advertising purposes. As stated at the outset, this technique is treated as equivalent to cookies for the purposes of the consent required and is activated only after acceptance.

How to disable cookies

In addition to using the banner displayed when the website’s home page opens, which contains a short cookie notice and allows users to “accept” or “reject” the application of non-essential cookies, or to change them through the link (or graphic symbol) at the bottom of every page of the website, users can act directly through their browser settings.

Most internet browsers are initially set to accept cookies automatically. These settings can be changed to block cookies or to be warned whenever cookies are sent to the browsing device. Users can also delete the cookies collected on their devices at the end of each browsing session. There are several ways to manage cookies. Please refer to the specific instructions for the browser being used. If different devices are used to view and access the website (for example, a computer, smartphone or tablet), users are responsible for ensuring that each browser on each device is configured to reflect their cookie preferences.

As mentioned above, for precise management of the cookies used for behavioural advertising, users can change their preferences here:

The links below provide specific instructions for managing cookies in some of the main browsing applications:

If none of the browsers listed above is used, users can in any case select “cookies” in their browser’s help section to find out where the cookie management folder is located.

The sections below contain details of the cookies applied to the website the user is visiting, updated in real time, and the link to change and/or withdraw consent.
